Brooklyn Driver Killed, Two Passengers Injured in New Year’s Day Crash on Route 23 in Sussex County

SUSSEX COUNTY, N.J. — A 21-year-old Brooklyn man was killed and two other people were injured in a single-vehicle crash on Route 23 south near milepost 49.2 on New Year’s Day, according to New Jersey State Police.

State police said the crash happened at about 11:58 a.m. when the driver, Nazar Bilous, 21, of Brooklyn, was operating an Audi SUV with two passengers. WRNJ Radio+2Patch+2

According to investigators, the Audi ran off the roadway while negotiating a curve, struck a large rock, re-entered the roadway, then left the road again and struck a large stump and a tree. Bilous suffered fatal injuries, police said.

A rear-seat passenger, Volodymyr-Zakhar Sheremeta, 21, of Brooklyn, was seriously injured and transported to a hospital, authorities said. A front-seat passenger suffered minor injuries and was also taken to a hospital.

State police said the investigation remains active and no additional information was immediately available. WRNJ Radio+1
