Two men from the Bronx were arrested in New Jersey after police say they carried out a shoplifting spree at a high-end retail store in Bergen County.

The incident unfolded at a Nordstrom location in Paramus, where officers on patrol noticed suspicious activity that quickly escalated into an arrest. Authorities say the case underscores growing concerns about retail theft across North Jersey.

Suspects and Alleged Theft

According to police, the suspects were identified as:

  • Nelson Dario Bermejo Fumero, 32
  • Carlos J. Aguilera Campechano, 31

Both men are residents of the Bronx.

Investigators allege the pair stole approximately $1,200 worth of merchandise, including designer perfume bottles and hats. Police say the items were concealed inside bags as the suspects attempted to leave the store without paying.

Loss prevention staff reportedly noticed the behavior and alerted authorities, allowing officers to intervene before the suspects could flee.

Arrest and Charges

Police confronted the men outside the store and took them into custody without incident. The stolen merchandise was recovered at the scene.

Both suspects were transported to a local police station for processing and were later remanded to jail pending further legal proceedings. While full charging details have not yet been released, authorities say the men are expected to face shoplifting and related offenses under New Jersey law.

Retail Theft Concerns Grow

While the dollar amount involved in this case was relatively limited, law enforcement officials stress that retail theft remains a serious issue for businesses across the region.

Even smaller thefts can add up, resulting in:

  • Significant financial losses
  • Increased security and staffing costs
  • Higher prices for consumers

Large shopping destinations like Paramus-area retail centers continue to attract theft due to their high volume of shoppers and merchandise.

Regional Crime Context

The arrests come amid a broader trend of property-related crimes involving suspects crossing state lines. Law enforcement agencies in both New Jersey and New York have recently flagged multiple cases involving shoplifting, mail theft, and organized retail theft operations.

Officials note that many of these incidents involve repeat offenders and require coordinated policing efforts to deter future activity.

What Comes Next

The two Bronx men are expected to appear in court in the coming days, where prosecutors will determine how the case proceeds. Potential outcomes could include fines, restitution, or jail time, depending on prior criminal history and the severity of the charges.

For now, authorities say the swift response by police and store security prevented additional losses and serves as another reminder of the ongoing fight against retail crime in New Jersey.
